SUVs currently dominate sales in Europe. These crossovers have become the preferred choice for millions of drivers across the continent. They come in a variety of sizes, body styles, brands, and formats. The BYD Tang is one of the most unique offerings on the market. Despite being launched in Europe in 2023, it received a significant update in 2024, focusing on both aesthetic and technical improvements.
BYD has established itself as the world's largest manufacturer of NEVs (New Energy Vehicles) . These plug-in hybrid and fully electric cars have expanded into other markets, including ours. The available range is constantly growing, with diverse models across different segments, from the small BYD Dolphin to the more prominent and luxurious BYD Han.
In its new 2026 generation, the BYD Tang L has brought great improvements that will delight those who purchase this model…
Technical characteristics of the BYD Tang
Although the Tang is a relatively new model in our market, it has a long history in China. Its original launch was in 2015, while the second generation appeared in 2018. This is the generation we have with us today. Beneath its muscular body lies the e-Platform 3.0 architecture , the same one found in other BYD products like the Seal and the BYD Atto 3.
This is the largest model from the manufacturer available in Europe. Its dimensions place it perfectly within the European D-SUV segment. Externally, it measures 4,87 meters long, 1,95 meters wide (excluding mirrors), and 1,72 meters high . To these measurements, we must add a wheelbase of 2,82 meters. This generous wheelbase allows it to offer up to three rows of seats.
The BYD Tang has enough space for seven passengers. Two of them sit in a third row whose seats fold flat into the trunk floor. Space is generous in all seating positions, although access to the last two seats can be somewhat difficult for elderly people or those with reduced mobility. As for cargo capacity, the minimum volume, with two rows of seats upright, is 440 liters . The maximum is achieved by folding down the two rear rows, reaching 1.655 liters.
BYD Tang mechanical range and gearboxes

Although BYD offers a diverse range of powertrains across its Chinese models, including long-range plug-in hybrid versions, its arrival in Europe is marked by a focus solely on all-electric vehicles. The Tang has a very limited range, with only one version , which reinforces the premium image the brand aims to project.
The platform houses two electric motors, one on each axle, with the rear motor generating more power. The combined maximum output reaches 517 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque . The entire system is powered by a BYD-manufactured LFP battery with a gross capacity of 108 kWh. The BYD Tang officially boasts a WLTP-rated range of up to 530 kilometers.
Its energy consumption is high, at 23,8 kWh per 100 kilometers. This figure is largely influenced by the vehicle's weight and dimensions. For charging, BYD installs high-power chargers, up to 190 kW DC and up to 11 kW AC . At maximum capacity, it can go from 0 to 80% charge in just 48 minutes.
The BYD Tang L (New Generation 2026) features an e-Platform 3.0 Evo , which has increased the car's length to approximately 4.90 meters, along with greater capacity and comfort. Versions have been upgraded to deliver up to 1100 hp for some markets, with a 1000V electrical architecture and faster charging capabilities.
BYD Tang equipment

It's important to note that, along with the Han, the Tang is the largest and most expensive model in the family in Europe. The brand aims to position it as its flagship, directly competing with premium models in the category. Inside, it boasts an excellent presentation, both in terms of technology and finishes . It offers top-quality materials with superb craftsmanship. The equipment range is limited to a single, exclusive trim level that includes all available technology. This is called the Flagship trim.
Despite being designed and manufactured in China, the Tang boasts a long and impressive list of features , comparable to any premium model. Highlights include: full LED headlights, digital instrumentation, a 15,6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, mobile device connectivity, a sunroof, 360-degree parking cameras, and a comprehensive suite of Level 2 driver assistance systems.
As for the Tang L model, the new interior features include a 6 or 7 seat configuration, 15.6″ OLED screens for on-the-go entertainment, and a premium 12-speaker sound system.

The BYD Tang according to Euro NCAP
Like all other vehicles sold in Europe, regardless of origin, BYD's largest SUV must undergo standardized safety tests across the continent. In late 2023, the BYD Tang was tested by Euro NCAP and received a five-star rating , the highest possible score. The results by category were as follows: 87 out of 100 for adult occupant protection, 87 out of 100 for child occupant protection, 80 out of 100 for pedestrian vulnerability, and 73 out of 100 for driver assistance system and ADAS response. These ratings remained unchanged after the 2024 update, as there were no modifications to the vehicle's structure.
BYD Tang rivals
Although its format isn't the most mainstream, the BYD Tang arrives in Europe to face competition primarily focused on the premium segment . The Chinese manufacturer aims to position itself in the middle ground, offering quality and systems similar to those of a premium model, with prices closer to the mainstream segment. Its rivals include models such as the Tesla Model Y , the Mercedes EQE SUV , the Audi Q8 e-tron , and the Polestar 3. Among them, it stands out for its excellent value for money, although it falls short in terms of customization and range.
