BYD has established itself as one of the most important manufacturers internationally. Its initials, Beyond Your Dreams, are beginning to sound more and more strongly in Europe. The Chinese brand already tried a first landing at the beginning of the century, but it has not been until now when the bet has intensified. Considered the world's largest manufacturer of plug-in vehicles, the European offer grows hand in hand with cars like the BYD Seal.

With its arrival on the Old Continent, the Seal wants to establish itself as one of the most attractive electric cars of the moment. Its launch takes place at the end of 2022, in China, although It is not until the end of 2023 when it arrives in Europe. It has the latest evolutions of the brand, including a next-generation battery developed by the brand itself. It joins other interesting models such as BYD Act 3 and BYD Inn.

Technical characteristics of the BYD Seal

The new Seal bases its design on the Ocean-X concept, a prototype presented in 2022 that preliminarily advanced the lines of the new medium sedan from the Chinese house. Under its body it hides the latest version of the multipurpose platform of the house, called e-Platform 3.0. Thanks to it you can integrate the most advanced technologies of the house, both in equipment and mechanics.

By measurements, the BYD Seal enters the European D segment, what are considered medium sedans. Externally it reaches 4,8 meters long, 1,87 meters wide (without mirrors) and 1,46 meters high. To these levels we must add a wheelbase of 2,92 meters. A generous wheelbase that allows it to offer a cabin for five passengers.

The second row has a completely flat floor and three seats where the side seats are the most comfortable and spacious. The roomy interior allows even adult passengers, up to 1,85 meters tall, to travel comfortably. In terms of cargo capacity, the Seal offers two trunks. The striker with a volume of 53 liters and the rear one with a minimum capacity of 400 liters, expandable by folding the second row.

BYD Seal mechanical range

Although in China BYD offers different mechanical configurations for the Seal, in Europe it is only offered with 100% electric sets. As is common, the range revolves around different battery combinations and number of motors. In Spain the entire offer receives the ZERO label from the DGT, which supposes considerable tax and mobility advantages. It is also possible to join the MOVES III Plan promoted by the Government.

The offer starts with RWD signal. Equipped with a single rear engine with 313 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque. It offers a top speed of 180 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5,9 seconds. It is associated with a Blade-type LFP battery with a gross capacity of 82,5 kWh that allows it to homologate 570 kilometers of autonomy in the WLTP cycle. For charging, it has high-power systems, up to 150 kW in direct current and up to 11 kW in alternating current.

Above, positioned as the top of the range, is the AWD Signal. In this case, a dual motor scheme is displayed, one motor for each axis. Maximum benefits advertise up to 530 horsepower and 670 Nm of torque. The top speed is 180 km/h, taking 3,8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. The Blade type LFP battery with 82,5 kWh gross capacity allows you to approve a operating range up to 520 kilometers under the WLTP protocol.

BYD Seal Equipment

We tend to think that cars developed and manufactured in China are not capable of meeting the high quality standards of European brands, but nothing could be further from the truth. BYD wants to position itself in a middle ground between generalist and premium brands. They offer very good quality and generous equipment for a very reasonable price.

Inside doors, the Seal has resources and details that denote this improvement in terms of quality. Good presentation, correct materials and seamless assembly are its key points. The range for Spain revolves around two finishes, inevitably associated with the two mechanical variants already mentioned. The offer starts with the Design model, while the most complete model comes with the Excellence finish.

At the equipment level, The BYD Seal offers the same content as any other modern car on the market. The technology is very outstanding, including such interesting elements as Full LED headlights, digital instrumentation, multimedia system with 15,6-inch rotating screen, heat pump climate control, connectivity for mobile devices and a long list of driving assistants with a level 2 autonomous driving.

The BYD Seal according to Euro NCAP

Like the rest of the vehicles on sale in Europe, regardless of origin, BYD's compact sedan has to face standardized safety tests on the Old Continent. At the end of 2023, the BYD Seal will undergo Euro NCAP testing, receiving a five-star rating, the highest possible score. The results by sections are as follows: 89 out of 100 in protection of adult passengers, 87 out of 100 in protection of child passengers, 82 out of 100 in pedestrian vulnerability and 76 out of 100 in response of driving assistants and ADAS equipment.

BYD Seal Rivals

We cannot think that because it is Chinese, BYD could face low-cost brands because the quality, equipment and benefits serve higher categories. Due to size, the Seal has important rivals before it, many of them positioned in the premium category. Figures such as the BMW i4, Tesla Model 3 (although it is smaller) and the Hyundai ioniq 6. All of them are similar in size, although the BYD stands out for its quality-price ratio.
