BMW is in the process of change. The classic German brand is in a moment of transition, a path that implies alterations at different levels. Design is one of them. The BMW 4 Series Coupe 2020 launches more than just a new design philosophy, a new stage where BMW's small kidneys are left behind. That same philosophy is renewed in 2024 with a restyling that focuses mainly on giving it a new interior appearance.
We have tested this car:
Test BMW Series 4 430i Cabrio 245 CV (with video)Test BMW 4 Series Coupé 430i 258 CV Pack MThis change comes with the launch of the second generation of the model. The first Series 4 Coupé that we met was in 2013. At that time BMW divided the range of the BMW Serie 3, leaving on the one hand the more familiar models, and on the other the coupé-style units, including various bodies that have been appearing over time: Series 4 Cabriolet and Series 4 Gran Coupe.
For this new edition the BMW 4 Series Coupé retains the bodywork and the DNA of the model. The philosophy that has always surrounded this unit is sportsmanship and design. Both factors are obtained with the new generation, although in this case with a very different style from the rest of the models in the BMW portfolio, although in certain aspects it partially recalls the BMW Serie 8.
Technical characteristics of the BMW 4 Series Coupé
As we have already mentioned, the Series 4 is born from the division of the Series 3 range. That leaves us with twinned models to a great extent. The BMW 4 Series Coupé rests on the same platform as the original model. In this case it is the CLAR architecture in its reduced version. It is the same used by many models of the house, such as the BMW Serie 5 or also the BMW Serie 7, although obviously in these cases with extended battle.
The 4 Series Coupé is directed to the D segment. Its measurements are ideal, although for this generation it has grown considerably in size. 4,77 meters long, 1,85 meters wide and 1,38 meters high. These measures are those corresponding to the coupé body, the only one announced at the moment. To these levels must be added a wheelbase of 2,85 meters, four centimeters more than the unit that precedes it. That translates into better interior space, especially in the rear row of seats.
Although the measurements of the new Series 4 are superior to those of the previous model, the cargo volume has been slightly reduced. The trunk has a minimum size of 440 liters, five less than the F32, the previous generation. In the future this volume will be altered with the arrival of new bodies, being the most spacious the 4 Series Gran Coupé, and the least habitable the 4 Series Cabrio, the latter reducing its capacity to 385 liters due to the roof of canvas.
Mechanical range and gearboxes of the BMW 4 Series Coupé
The essence of a coupé like the BMW 4 Series Coupé is driving, and for this you have to rely on a mechanical range that transmits many sensations. The CLAR architecture gives you access to a wide and varied mechanical offer. The mechanical range is structured with three gasoline options plus three diesel. Once again the top of the range is the BMW M4 with 510 horsepower that, like the rest of the family, will be updated in 2024.
The branch of gasoline boots with the access version, the 420i 184 hp. He is followed by 430i 258 hp and finally the most powerful unit at the moment, the 440 horsepower M374i. The first two send the power of the engine to the rear axle, while the most powerful version manages power delivery through an xDrive all-wheel drive scheme. All versions arrive associated with an automatic gearbox eight-speed torque converter type.
As for diesel, we are faced with a range of performance that covers between the 190 horses of the 420d Coupé, to the 340 horses of the M440d xDrive. The differences between them, beyond performance, lie in the number of cylinders, ranging between 4 and 6 depending on the version. All of them have the advantageous ECO label from the DGT thanks to the integration of a 48-volt microhybrid system. BMW misses the opportunity to introduce ZERO variants from 2024.
Equipment of the BMW 4 Series Coupe
As is to be expected from a premium brand like BMW, the quality must be on a par with the performance and the sale price. For this new generation of the BMW 4 Series increases quality standards thanks to the use of better materials and a detailed manufacturing process. In this way a great sensation of comfort encompasses the occupants in each journey.
As usual in the house, the 4 Series is offered with different aesthetic packages that modify the exterior appearance, going from a sober finish to a more sporty one. The novelty is in the introduction of the M Sport Pro variant that will have exclusive details halfway between a conventional sports finish and one derived from the M units. Of course it is also possible to benefit from the M Performance program with which we can give a wilder touch to the exterior appearance.
In terms of equipment, as expected, the technological burden becomes one of the highlights of the new BMW 4 Series. The list of options is long and expensive, and comes standard with interesting proposals such as LED headlights. Of course, that's just a small sample of what you can get. Keyless entry and start, sunroof, voice control, multimedia system with 12,3-inch screen, digital instrument panel, Head-Up Display, heated seats, 360-degree camera and much more, including a large number of assistants and driving aids

The BMW 4 Series Coupé according to Euro NCAP
Thanks to its new generation, the coupe sedan offers high qualities in terms of active and passive safety. In 2019, it undergoes the usual Euro NCAP tests, receiving the five-star rating, the highest possible score and the same records as its Gran Coupé version. The results by sections are as follows: 9,7 in protection of adult occupants, 8,3 in protection of child occupants, 9,3 in vulnerability of pedestrians and 7,2 in work of driving assistants. These values remain valid after the 2024 update as there are no changes to the structure of the vehicle.
The BMW 4 Series Coupé from Km 0 and second hand
Since its launch, the BMW 4 Series has positioned itself as one of the most desired models in the range. Thanks to that has acquired significant levels of popularity, accumulating many sales that have been passing to the second-hand or second-hand secondary markets. Scanning the market we see a wide range of possibilities, many of them before being officially called Series 4. The amounts start at figures close to 14.000 euros for 2015 models with access diesel mechanics.
Given the acquired reputation for sportiness and durability, the depreciation of the Series 4 stands at 24%, the best data in its category, only surpassed by the Porsche 911. As for the offer available in the Km 0 channel, there are few options. Dealerships do not accumulate stock given the high degree of customization of orders and the difficulties that the market is going through for the supply and manufacture of certain components.
Rivals of the BMW 4 Series Coupe
As much as the designs change, the rivalries are still there. The 4 Series is not aimed at a very crowded market, but that does not mean that it has rivals of weight and importance before it. The main ones also come from Germany, from rival premium houses. On one hand we have the Audi A5, and on the other hand Mercedes C-Class Coupe. The three make up the trident of premium coupé models, where they have practically no rivals in their price range and size.

Prices of the BMW 4 Series Coupe
It's time to talk about the ugly business of money. As usual, ugly custom, the new generations are more expensive than their predecessors. The Series 4 already has prices in the Spanish market, and in the best of cases the starting price of a BMW 4 Series Coupé is 55.000 euros for the 420i access. The most expensive unit is the M440i xDrive, whose minimum cost is 82.000 euros. If we focus on the Series 4 Cabrio, the price starts at 62.500 euros, without offers or promotions.
