The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé arrived on the market in the first quarter of 2020. This four-door model, despite being called the 2 Series, does not share a platform with the BMW 2 Series Coupé (two-door) and 2 Series Cabriolet (convertible) launched in 2014. A major facelift based on the 2020 model is expected at the end of 2024.

Therefore, it uses transverse engines instead of longitudinal ones and, in turn, it doesn't have rear-wheel drive , but rather front-wheel drive. However, some versions do feature the xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
As it's derived from the 1 Series, it shares some similarities with its front end . However, it also has many distinctive features, such as an even wider grille and a different style for the LED headlights. The most significant changes are seen in the side profile and rear , with a smoother silhouette and three distinct volumes.
Technical characteristics of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé
As mentioned, this 2 Series Gran Coupé uses the platform of the 1 Series, X1, and X2. It also shares its underpinnings with the latest MINI models, as it also belongs to the BMW Group. A more compact, two-door version, the BMW 2 Series Coupé, was launched in its second generation in 2022.
If we focus on the exterior dimensions, we see that despite being based on a compact car, it is relatively long. In fact, it is the most compact sedan from the German brand. The 2 Series Gran Coupé has a total length of 4.546 mm , a width of 1.800 mm (excluding mirrors), and a height of 1.435 mm.
The wheelbase is 2.670 mm . This distance, despite its exterior dimensions, doesn't translate into comfortable interior space. Rear passenger room is very limited. More than two adults shouldn't travel in it. Meanwhile, the trunk offers a minimum capacity of 430 liters, which is reduced to 360 liters for the mild-hybrid versions. Maximum cargo volume is achieved by folding down the rear seats.
Mechanical range and gearboxes of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé
This four-seater coupe is available with several gasoline and diesel engines . Currently, there are no electric or plug-in hybrid options. The entry-level gasoline version is the 216i , which has a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine producing 122 hp. Also available with gasoline engines are the 220i MHEV with 170 hp and the higher -performance M235i , which uses a 2.0-liter engine with 300 hp and all-wheel drive.
The diesel range starts with the 218d variant , which offers 150 hp. The highest-performing version is the 220d with a mild hybrid (MHEV) system and an ECO label . It features a turbocharged two-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 163 hp and stands out for being the most fuel-efficient unit in the entire range, achieving just 4,2 liters per 100 kilometers.
Regarding the gearboxes, after the latest update, the entire fleet offers a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission , including the M division model. Power is always sent to the front axle. Only the M235i includes, as standard, xDrive all-wheel drive, which distributes power between all four wheels.
Equipment of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe
Being a BMW, a high level of quality in the finishes and materials is expected. Even though the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is the entry point to the German sedan range, its interior is very well finished. The presentation is technologically advanced thanks to its dual-panel system . The 10,25-inch instrument cluster and the 10,7-inch infotainment system merge to form a large, curved panel. All controls are accessed through these two elements.
As with most models from the brand, the range of equipment and configuration options is very broad, allowing for many customization choices. There are also several trim levels, including the base model, M Sport Design, M Sport, M Sport Pro, and M. The BMW M trim is reserved for the 235i xDrive engine.
All 2 Series Gran Coupé models come standard with LED headlights , 16-inch alloy wheels, split-folding rear seats, a multifunction steering wheel, automatic headlights and wipers, parking sensors , and cruise control with speed limiter. Of course, driver assistance systems are also available, such as adaptive cruise control , lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.

When it comes to safety, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé underwent the standard Euro NCAP tests in 2019, receiving a five-star rating, the highest possible score. The results by category are as follows: 94 out of 100 for adult occupant protection, 87 out of 100 for child occupant protection, 76 out of 100 for pedestrian vulnerability, and 72 out of 100 for driver assistance systems. These ratings remain valid today, as the platform has not been updated.
Rivals of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe
The reason for launching this coupe sedan is to fill a gap between traditional five-door hatchbacks and D-segment sedans. In other words, the 2 Series Gran Coupe slots in between the 1 Series and 3 Series . Other premium brands have long occupied this space, and BMW is now claiming its share. Thus, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe's main rivals are primarily German models. These include the Audi A3 Sedan and the Mercedes CLA Coupe and Mercedes A-Class Sedan . All of these are four-door sedans derived from compact cars and belonging to premium brands.
