BMW has always sold sportsmanship, but the new European obligations withdraw us from that concept to fall for the sake of more modern and efficient technologies. The Bmw iX It is not the first electric company of the company, but it does want to become one of the first with the highest sales volume, something that at the time it already achieved BMW i3, his first electric car.

Except for the technology it uses to move, the iX is hard to catalog. Is it an SUV shaped like a minivan, or a raised saloon with a stretched body? It is not easy to identify it by its lines. Explore a new design concept. It is the first to introduce an aesthetic philosophy that will later be used in other products of the i family., although not all, as we have already seen with the new BMW i4.

Its commercial launch takes place in the first quarter of 2021There is no predecessor, so it's considered a completely new model. It's of course the first to introduce highly efficient systems and technologies, and interestingly, it's the first BMW model to be manufactured entirely at the BMW plant in Dingolfing, China. In 2025, it will undergo a minor facelift, accompanied by technical and mechanical improvements.

Technical characteristics of the BMW iX

The BMW iX does not take advantage of its combustion brothers. Its development has been carried out from scratch, and that has involved the design and manufacture of a completely new modular platform. He is the first to dispose of it. Designed to house only 100% electric drive systems, it allows its dimensions to be adjusted for the model in question, positioning all the batteries in the lower part of the vehicle.

In the specific case of the iX, we are talking about a model belonging to the E or E-SUV segment, depending on how each one catalogs it. That leaves us with some very exact exterior measurements: 4,96 meters long, 1,97 meters wide and 1,69 meters high. To these dimensions must be added a very large wheelbase, exactly three meters. That translates into excellent roominess for up to five passengers.

BMW designers have worked with the shape to serve electrical efficiency goals. The BMW iX offers a drag coefficient of just 0,25. In terms of cargo capacity, the iX only offers a trunk, rear as usual. It offers a minimum volume of 500 liters, expandable to 1.750 liters when the second row of seats is folded down completely.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the BMW iX

BMW iX xDrive60

You have to think of the BMW iX as what it is, a 100% electric car. Its mechanical range focuses solely and exclusively on this type of technology without any mechanical assistance or range extender as in the beginning the i3 did. The range revolves around different mechanical versions and different battery capacities.

The range starts with BMW iX xDrive45. It mounts two electric motors, one on each axle, in order to generate an electric four-wheel drive system. Total power output is 408 horsepower. Ride a 94,8 kWh net capacity lithium-ion battery, with a maximum recharging power of 175 kW in direct current and 22 kW in alternating current. It offers an approved autonomy in the WLTP cycle of 602 kilometers, with an approved cost of 21,8 kWh for every 100 kilometers travelled.

It is followed by iX xDrive60 with dual motor and 544 horsepower. In this case, the lithium-ion battery grows to 109,1 kWh of net capacity with a  Autonomy approved in the WLTP cycle extends to 701 kilometersThe most powerful of the family is the iX M70 xDrive, featuring the two most powerful engines in the series. It delivers 659 horsepower and 1.200 Nm of torque. It has a 108,9 kWh net capacity battery that can travel a certified distance of 600 kilometers.

Equipment of the BMW iX

As we have already said, the BMW iX explores a completely new concept in the German house. This idea has not only been extended to exterior design or electrical mechanics, it has also been applied in the way of conceiving the interior. A space where designers have unified the ecological theory of the electric car using recycled materials that generate a high sense of quality and comfort for all occupants.

Technology is intrinsic to the concept of the electric car. BMW has state-of-the-art systems, and exposes them in a very visible way that in a way is quite reminiscent of the one it uses Mercedes on your products. The range of equipment is structured into two levels: Standard and Sport Package. In each of them the technology and aesthetics are updated, being able to enjoy several customizable elements.

As far as equipment is concerned, the BMW iX sports the latest advances from the house. Absolutely nothing is left in the inkwell. The list of elements is very long, but details such as: matrix LED headlights, Head-Up Display, multimedia system with double screen of 12,3 inches each, connected services, connectivity for mobile devices, induction charger and systems of assistance that make it a car with level 2 autonomous driving.

Rivals of the BMW iX

It is difficult to catalog the BMW iX. Its silhouette does not have much rivalry in the market. Their natural enemies could be classified within the generic spectrum of high-cost premium category electrics. That leaves us with some names like Audi e-tron, Jaguar I PACE, Mercedes EQC, Tesla Model X, his own brother BMW iX3 and a little more. To them we could add other generalist units such as the Volkswagen ID.4. or the skoda enyaq, both with a very similar format to the German one, but with a smaller size and price.
