SUVs make even the sportiest brand succumb to their attractions. They are the main attraction of the markets, and all brands seek to conquer their market share. We have tested this car:
Test Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio 2023 (with video)Test Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2.2 Diesel 210 CV Super AT8 AWD Q4The Stelvio was launched in 2016. Its arrival came just a few months after that of the Alfa Romeo Giulia, the sedan with which it shares the vast majority of components. Together, SUV and saloon, they gave the starting signal to a new stage of the house, a change that will be completed with the arrival of future models.
Since its introduction the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has not changed much. In 2020 it undergoes a first update, subsequently repeated at the beginning of 2023. Both are mainly focused on the implementation of more modern equipment accompanied by a minimal aesthetic change and a slight renewal of the mechanical fleet in order to adapt to new regulations and new market trends. There are no electrified formats.
Technical characteristics of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio
The refloat of Alfa Romeo As a brand, it implies the development of modern and cutting-edge technologies. The Stelvio rests on the same structure as the Giulia, the Giorgio platform. They are the first of the house to enjoy this modular chassis capable of adjusting to different bodies and circumstances. It is the same one that will be used in future releases.
But in the case of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio it is adapted to the D-SUV segment. That leaves us with concrete external measures of 4,69 meters long, 1,9 meters wide and 1,67 meters high. To these external dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,82 meters with a minimum weight in running order of 1.735 kilograms. One of the lightest in the category.
Such a battle allows to offer a cabin for a maximum of five passengers, where the three rear ones enjoy correct seats but somewhat fair in width with a marked transmission tunnel. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio offers a trunk with a minimum capacity of 525 liters, expandable to 1.600 liters when the second row of seats is folded down completely.
Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio
We continue with the links between Stelvio and Giulia, the mechanics. The Italians propose a motor portfolio focused mainly on diesel and gasoline variants. The 2022 update did not introduce more modern and sustainable variants, something that supposes a disadvantage in the face of its most immediate rivals that can offer it.
Three gasoline and two diesel units make up the entire range. The offer starts with the 2.2 diesel of 190 horses. That same block can raise the benefits up to 210 horses. The gasoline ones, on the other hand, offer a power output of 200 horsepower., being able to offer a maximum of 280 for the same two-liter turbo engine. All units, except the access, offer all-wheel drive, and management is always derived from an eight-speed automatic transmission.
As is customary at Alfa Romeo, performance is not neglected. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio It is positioned as one of the sportiest SUVs out there. It offers a turbocharged vee six-cylinder block with 2.891 cubic centimeters. develop 520 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. Not only more power, but also particular and more extreme dynamic settings.
Equipment of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio
The premium segment customer is a customer looking for a higher degree of refinement. Alfa Romeo wants to position itself in that market, and therefore offers content according to it. The interior of the Stelvio shows a sense of correct quality, although not as high as that of its German rivals. As for the assembly and adjustment process, there is no problem or inconvenience.
The range of equipment revolves around various levels. From smallest to largest endowment we find: Super, Sprint, TI, Veloce and Competizione in addition to the special level of the Quadrifoglio. At each level, not only the system load is altered, but also the available mechanical range and, albeit slightly, the external appearance. Being able to go from a more sober look to a more sporty one depending on the taste of each client.
As far as equipment is concerned present technology is not capable of matching that of its toughest and most immediate rivals, although in 2023 it will be used to improve the endowment. Elements such as digital instrumentation, the multimedia system with an 8,8-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, parking camera, cruise control, browser, sunroof, keyless access and starting and much more, including a correct provision of driving assistants.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio of Km 0 and second hand
Historically, Alfa Romeo drags an image problem. In the past, many of their products were dismissed as unreliable and mechanically weak. The Stelvio is a highly sought-after SUV, but its high price tag causes many buyers to turn to secondary sales channels. In them we can verify that the depreciation value is slightly higher than the average for the segment, standing at around 29,5%, while their rivals are one or two points below.
If we take a look at the used and second-hand market, we see that the cheapest units date back to the beginning of the marketing phase, in 2017. Prices start at around 26.000 euros for units with more than 90.000 kilometers. The Km 0 channel is more limited, offers are lower and prices are higher, offering the cheapest units with a starting price of around 43.000 euros. Slight discounts from dealer prices.
Rivals of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio
When talking about the rivals of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, we have to look at the premium D-SUV segment. A market not as exclusive as one might think, but with different points of view. The most direct enemy of the Italian is the Porsche Macan, at least for sporty feel than for price. To it we can add units such as Listen Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes GLC, Jaguar F-Pace or Volvo XC60 in a similar price and performance range. And finally we can add other premium D-SUVs with a different cut such as the Range Rover Velar and Lexus NX, among others.
