The electric car market in Spain during 2024 has had a remarkable performance, but it continues to face challenges in establishing itself as a predominant option. Although total electric sales have registered moderate growth in the 4,21% Compared to 2023, it has remained practically static in terms of market share, standing at 5,36%, an identical percentage to the previous year.
The model that has set the trend in this segment is, without a doubt, the Tesla Model 3, which is crowned as the best-selling electric car in Spain in 2024. This electric sedan managed to register a total of 11.043 units, benefiting from its outstanding autonomy, its recent updates and a competitive price that positions it as the undisputed leader. In turn, its older brother, the Tesla Model Y, ranks second with 5.495 units registered, although with a fall of 19% compared to the previous year.
The rise of other brands and models
While Tesla dominates the scene, there are also other models that have caught the attention of Spanish drivers. A clear example is the compact MG4 Electric, which ranks third with 2.668 units sold. This Chinese car remains strong despite a slight decline in 14% in its sales compared to 2023.
Another model that has stood out this year has been the Volvo EX30, which is positioned as the fourth best-selling electric car in our country with 2.358 unitsThis compact SUV has experienced remarkable growth and is emerging as an interesting option due to its design and cutting-edge technology.
The list goes on with the BMW iX1, MINI electric and Mercedes-Benz EQA, which have also performed strongly within the premium electric market. In addition, brands such as BYD They have managed to enter the radar of Spanish consumers with models such as the BYD Act 3 and BYD Dolphin, consolidating the growing influence of Chinese manufacturers in the sector.
General results and challenges of the sector
In total, 65.478 electric cars were registered during 2024, a figure that, although positive, is still well below the decarbonisation objectives required by the European Union. On the other hand, sales of plug-in hybrids have decreased by 5%, recording some 59.707 units, reflecting a market in transition where conventional hybrids and pure electrics seem to attract greater interest.
The market share for electric vehicles, which remains at 5,36%, remains insufficient to meet the 2030 environmental targets. However, the increase in available options and investments in infrastructure such as charging points, along with incentives such as the Moves III Plan, aim to change this trend in the coming years.
