BMW M4 CSL: All the keys to the most radical M4

BMW M4 CSL front profile

The BMW M4 is one of the most coveted cars for sports car enthusiasts, but adding the legendary CSL designation transforms it into a dream few can realize. BMW has just unveiled the new BMW M4 CSL, an extreme version whose production will be limited to just 1.000 units.

This edition is derived from the M4 Competition, although its approach is far more radical . It's practically a race-prepared car, incorporating solutions from the M4 GT3, but with just enough technical modifications to be street legal.

BMW M4 CSL: More powerful and lighter

BMW M4 CSL drift

Starting with the engine, the new BMW M4 CSL uses the same 3-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six . However, it has been tuned with increased boost pressure to deliver 550 hp at 6.250 rpm and 650 Nm of torque. The standard M4 produces 510 hp.

In this case, performance improves with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3,7 seconds and a 0 to 200 km/h time of 10,7 seconds . Meanwhile, the top speed increases to 307 km/h . It continues to use an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, although it's worth noting that this CSL is only available with rear-wheel drive (there is no option for the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, as there is in the M4 Competition).

Equally noteworthy is the 100-kilogram weight saving , thanks to the removal of the rear seats, carbon fiber bucket seats in the front, a carbon fiber hood and trunk, M carbon-ceramic brakes, special lightweight alloy wheels, and model-specific soundproofing with ultralight materials. Its weight is 1.700 kilograms.

Furthermore, the vehicle's structural rigidity has also been increased . The aluminum reinforcement in the engine compartment is particularly noteworthy in this regard, as can be seen in some of the accompanying images.

Firmer setting adaptive suspension

BMW M4 CSL dynamic

Meanwhile, the BMW M4 CSL continues to rely on adaptive M suspension , but with a more extreme setup. Among other things, it lowers the ride height by 8 mm compared to an M4 Competition. This suspension, with its specific springs, dampers, anti-roll bars, and mounts, is accompanied by a new steering alignment with increased negative camber.

On the other hand, the CSL comes with M traction control offering up to 10 levels of adjustment. This allows the driver to fine-tune the electronics' permissiveness. The German manufacturer states that " controlled drifts are possible between levels 1 and 5. Levels 6 through 10 maximize traction, taking into account both track surface conditions and tire temperature ."

Interestingly, the BMW M4 CSL has set the best lap time ever achieved by a production car manufactured by the BMW Group at the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit : 7:15,677 on the 20,6 km section of the circuit dedicated to comparison testing and 7:20,207 for the full 20,8 km lap.
