Audi standardizes its model names worldwide

  • Audi adopts a global alphanumeric nomenclature to identify the power and positioning of its models.
  • The designation includes two numbers that represent the power in kilowatts of each vehicle.
  • The names of the model series such as A and Q are retained, but with a clearer hierarchical classification.
  • The change will be implemented in all new model generations from 2017 onwards.

The German brand Audi has announced a significant transformation in the the way he names his models. The novelty is that it has established a new global standard nomenclature that promises to facilitate the identification of the power and positioning of its vehicles. This change affects the entire range of models, from compacts to SUVs, and covers both internal combustion ICE cars and conventional or Plug-In electric and hybrid cars.

This global naming system pursues a more logical and intuitive order for consumers eliminating the confusion that could be generated by the variety of names used before. Audi has taken into account both the demands of its customers and the suggestions of its international distributors, with the aim of offering a clearer and more transparent experience. If the previous system confused you, now we will tell you what the new one will be like. Let's see if it is better... or not...

What is Audi's new nomenclature?

Audi standardizes the nomenclature used to name its models

Hereinafter The global alphanumeric name of the models will be composed of one or more letters followed by a number. The letters A and Q will continue to distinguish low-floor vehicles from high-floor vehicles (passenger cars and SUVs). The numbers, which currently range from 1 to 8, will allow for a clearer classification, regardless of the type of engine used. As a consequence, the previous distinction between different drive technologies, based on even and odd model numbers, will no longer be valid.

Thanks to the classification by size and location, fully electric models can use the same combination of letters and numbers as vehicles with ICE combustion engines. The necessary distinction between models and variants within the range is made through the body style. (for example, Avant, Sedan or Sportback) and the engine code that has been previously set (such as e-tron, TFSI e, TFSI or TDI).

According to Marco Schubert, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing of AUDI AG…

«This decision is the result of intensive discussions and responds to the wishes of our customers. and the opinions of our international distributors. Our nomenclature now offers all customers around the world an intuitive orientation of our product range. We choose the names of our models in such a way that reveal their size and positioning at first glance«

Therefore, Audi wants customers to have no doubts when identifying its models not only against its rivals, but also within its own range. In itself, the nomenclature system used until now was at least erratic and complicated to understand since not everyone understands kW or knows how to translate this number into pure and hard HP. However, for now it is not known how it will be in its practical application so we have to wait for the first model to debut it to be official…

When will this change be implemented?

The first model to adopt the new nomenclature will be the next iteration of the Audi A6 with internal combustion engineIf the plans of the Ingolstadt company go as planned, this model will be made official on March 4, which is when its official presentation will take place for the whole world. Audi says that thanks to the engine code, the A6 Avant TFSI, for example, will be clearly differentiated from the A6 Avant e-tron fully electric. In addition, no retroactive name changes are planned for models already on the market.

We'll see…
